Alex was my throws coach in high school. I ended my junior year with a 30’ PR in shot put and a 90’ PR in discus. Working with Tempered Athletics from that following summer until the next season, I ended my senior year with a 44’ PR in shot put and a 116’ PR in discus. Working with Tempered Athletics not only increased my performance in the sport dramatically, but deeply increased my understanding of the movements and the motions behind my performance. If you’re looking to improve your knowledge and your throwing abilities, Tempered Athletics is definitely the place to go!
I went to Tempered Athletics with a multitude of restrictions and a substantial goal, and Alex still delivered. I am a three-sport athlete, and am therefore unable to focus on swimming year round. As such, I attempted to gain an edge by working out during the approximately 6 months leading up to my season. Due to the nature of swimming, I required a program that would optimize my muscle recruitment and explosivity without gaining excessive size. For reference, my main events this year were the 50 and 100 freestyle, where I was already an accomplished swimmer with 15 years of training experience. In the lead up to my season, I was able to add around 12-15 percent to each of my main exercises (squat, bench, and clean). What makes that more impressive is the fact that it was done without altering my size or shape in a way that would slow me down in the water. He also had to plan all of my programs around the fact that I was running cross country the entire time. He helped me to train plyometric and explosive exercises to improve my starts off of the blocks, which is something I never would have considered. In the end, I took my 50 free from a 22.09 to a 21.61 and I took my 100 from a 49.15 to a 48.17 (for reference, that took my 50 from around 40th in the state to 23rd). I was able to earn school records in both events and a conference record in the 100 free. Considering my conference record was won by 0.08 seconds, I can confidently say I would not have achieved it without the help of Alex. To focus on the experience, I appreciated every minute of our practices. As someone who came in with next to zero gym knowledge, he never made me feel silly for asking a question and he had a clear desire to teach me everything he knew. My workout goals for the future are much different now that swimming is over, however, he has given me the confidence to know I won’t be wasting my time in the gym.
